humble design

It would take an average Humble client 18 years to save enough money to furnish a home in the way we do in just a few hours. Since 2009, our staff and volunteers have turned moving in into moving forward. Since arriving in San Diego in 2018, Humble Design has helped more than 300 clients to change their lives for good. We have partnered with DTE to build out an expansion manual and standardize a very well oiled system. If we don’t keep to our schedule, it doesn’t work.

She found a house she could afford, but there was nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were making nests on the floor where they were going to sleep. I cried my eyes out on my way to picking up my children from day care thinking about those kids sleeping on the floor that night while I was tucking my children into their big beautiful beds. While in line at carpool, I started asking people if they had extra items they could donate. I went around with my friend Ana in her pick-up truck and started collecting items to furnish this home. We called our friends, our neighbors, called people we didn’t know — asking for beds, linens, kitchen items.

when does a house become home?

How do you find balance while running Humble? Balance is an elusive mirage on the horizon. We are all chasing it and will never stop if we love our families and our jobs. Chasing it is the important thing though — never give up drawing a line in the sand. I find balance in leaning on my husband Rob for help.

After the family found a house, they had nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were sleeping on piles of blankets. Treger and her friend Ana started collecting items to furnish the home.

When I started this I knew nothing about the area or nonprofits. Every meeting I took with community leaders or knowledgeable individuals ended with me making one more friend. I love the way the communities take responsibility for the other’s well-being. A variety of companies have teamed up with Humble Design, with CB2 serving as their city sponsor with funds and goods. Its beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia. McGillin’s has outlasted Strawbridge’s, the Civil War and even Prohibition. McGillin’s celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors the year Lincoln was elected president. That’s shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for Philadelphia City Hall. The beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia and one of the oldest taverns in the country.

As he told the story of how he met his wife, Laura, in the late ‘60s at the Jersey Shore, Doyle looked left, then right, and leaned in. He didn’t see active combat, but the experience — his first outside of Philadelphia — changed his life. He’s still able to easily recite Korean words and phrases, and recalls with fondness the people he met there. His first job was “huckstering,” or selling tomatoes, bananas, and other produce door-to-door as a kid. From there, he worked at a Dairy Queen, a soda shop, and sold newspapers at Municipal Stadium.

Initially called The Bell in Hand, the famous pub opened its doors in 1860 in the home of Irish immigrant William "Pa" McGillin, the owner and operator of the establishment. It was nicknamed McGillin's by those who frequented the establishment, and the bar took on the title as its official name. The Sons of Ben, a supporter group of Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union, was created at McGillin’s! Bryan James, Andrew Dillon, and David Flagler founded the Sons of Ben supporters club on January 17, 2007, the 301st anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Philadelphia soccer fan Ethan Gomberg suggested the name.

Besides being one of the oldest bars in Philly, McGillin’s in Midtown Village is also the entire city’s favorite place to day drink and watch sports. If you’re in Philly during football or baseball season and can’t get tickets to the real thing, there’s no better place to be. They also have a fireplace, so it’s especially useful in the winter when all of the outdoor beer gardens are closed and day drinking options have dwindled. McGillin’s has been featured on numerous “Best Of” lists, including being named one of the “14 coolest bars in America” by Gourmet magazine and one of the “50 best Irish pubs in America” by Complex magazine. In addition to these accolades, it boasts a collection of iconic vintage Philadelphia signs from bygone stores and businesses, like Woolworth's and the John Wanamaker Department Store.

As with most bars and restaurants whose reputations precede them, crowds are commonplace at McGillin’s. Don’t expect lighting-speed service if your visit falls during a weekend or weeknight special (which is basically every day, considering there’s always something on offer). That said, the staff hustle hard to keep service moving. If you can, seek out a barstool in front of barman John Doyle, who’s as much legend as the place itself (he’s been behind the bar at McGillin’s for more than 40 years). In 1910, the bar celebrated its 50th anniversary with a new brick facade and officially changed its name to McGillin’s Olde (the "e" seems to have been dropped in recent years) Ale House.

Not only did our city lay the framework for the founding of our country, but we set precedents with our shops, architecture, bars, restaurants, and more. It’s no surprise then that the oldest bar in Philadelphia has a fascinating history, and it remains one of Philly’s go-to spots nearly 160 years after it opened. That was the extent of Doyle’s application and interview process.

More than 100 years ago, Christopher’s grandparents immigrated to America making McGillin’s especially proud to be part of this campaign that helps immigrants get a fighting chance here. McGillin’s served blue beer in honor of Villanova’s National Basketball Championship in 2016 and again in 2018. Le Bec Fin, which kicked off Philadelphia’s restaurant renaissance in 1970, closes and its sign is added to collection at McGillin’s. Third generation of Spaniak family joins management team at McGillin’s — Christopher Mullins, Jr., son of Mary Ellen & Chris Mullins & grandson of Henry Spaniak.

Catherine McGillin locked the front door and served food. (But Mullins said he wouldn’t be surprised if she added a splash of whiskey to the cups of tea she served.) When it ended in 1933, she took the same key from her breast pocket and opened the door. Co-owner and manager Chris Mullins, Jr. said preparing for the holiday is like holding practices for the big game—it’s the biggest event of the year. “It’s more of a Super Bowl than ever,” he said.

They belly up to the bar, reliving the glory days. Generally speaking, McGillin’s gets progressively louder, busier, and younger as the night goes on. During the Mummer’s Parade, whet & warm your whistle by the fire at McGillin’s.

The bar only took cash, allowed smoking, and charged 45 cents for a mug of Genny Cream Ale. Doyle, who lives in Andorra, was born in South Philly and raised in the Tasker Homes, where he was the middle child of seven in an Irish-Catholic family. Today, he’s the last remaining of his siblings. Doyle was so stoic and observant that the staff thought he was a cop.

Mullins said many Irish tourists visiting Philadelphia stop by the tavern, which can be hard to find, as Drury Street is a small side street. Prior to cell phones, many customers or potential customers could wander for a while before they found it. In 2003, a business older than McGillin’s, J.E. Caldwell, a jeweler who started in 1839, closed, and its sign was added to the collection. This year, the tavern will feature a twist on the traditional Irish Coffee, called a Nutty Irishman Coffee. It is the same as the Irish Coffee but with an added shot of Frangelico (hazelnut liquor).

For its annual holiday celebrations, the city’s oldest tavern expects so many customers its restrooms cannot accommodate them. The bar stocks a great selection of local beers like Yuengling, Yards and Victory, while the televisions are always tuned to the most important local sporting event. In 2013, Gourmet magazine called McGillin's one of the three coolest bars in the United States.

The Sons of Ben are the first Philadelphia Union supporters club, and use the Philadelphia civic colors of light blue and yellow as opposed to the darker shades officially used by the team. The Sons of Ben began during a flurry of rumors regarding Major League Soccer’s negotiations with investors regarding a potential team in the Philadelphia region. So one night when the doorman had to use the bathroom, he asked Doyle to watch the door and he did. “I would stand by the door, look around, and just have a couple of drinks,” he said. Mulllins does not have children, but said he has many nieces and nephews who might someday carry on the family tradition of hosting an Irish pub. In 1993, Mullins’ parents, Chris Sr. and Henry’s daughter, Mary Ellen Spaniak Mullins, bought the tavern when the city was again on shaky economic ground. A comeback that begun under Mayor Ed Rendell’s administration benefitted McGillin’s and every other restaurant and bar in the city.

During Prohibition, Ma McGillin hires a chef. Serves food and ice cream and perhaps, a few tea cups were tipped on the second floor. McGillin’s is only closed a few days a year  – and Thanksgiving is one of them.

And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfather of four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’s oldest-operating bar. This month marks 50 years for Doyle at McGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860, and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong party in his honor. He started going to the storied Center City bar regularly on Friday nights in the early ‘70s, when his wife would go to her mother’s house to do laundry. The signs of defunct businesses, like department stores Lit Brothers and Gimbels, show the tavern’s lasting power. Mullins said that when the Strawbridge & Clothier store at 8th and Market Streets closed in 2006, employees brought one of its exterior, circular stone signs to be hung there.

John Wanamaker, whose flagship department store was nearby, was said to be a frequent customer. “We have heard stories that he did, I assume, in his younger years as he died during prohibition,” said Mullins. Festivities begin Saturday, with an open-to-all party featuring surprise guests at the bar from noon to 5 p.m. Celebrations will continue throughout the year, with specials like Doyle dollar dog days, and will culminate on St. Patrick’s Day. But it’s interacting with everyday people that Doyle loves best. On Saturdays and on St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Day. On those occasions, the bar is often packed with his regulars who’ve become friends and his friends who’ve become regulars. He’s also met Chase Utley, watched Jason Kelce play cards in McGillin’s, and worked the bar during the Phillies 2008 World Series parade, the busiest day he’s ever seen.

Doyle earned a "Best of Philly" award in 2010 when he was named the city's best bartender, and his wife, Laura Doyle, said all these years later she doesn't mind sharing him with the rest of the city. As Doyle gets ready to turn 80, he's scaled back his schedule to one day a week, but he's now worked for three generations of owners, and his tenure has spanned eight Philadelphia mayors. He's also served then Vice President Joe Biden and many other national politicians, athletes and celebrities. Expect Irish pub classics, like the ever-popular Mile High Meatloaf and Shepherd’s Pie, plus Americana bar bites—everything from burgers to pizza and wings (just 35 cents per plate, if you come on a Tuesday night). Ma McGillin finally passed away in 1937 at the ripe old age of 90, passing management of McGillin’s along to her daughter, Mercedes McGillin Hooper, one of 13 children to be raised on the bar’s second floor. Hooper ran the establishment with her nephew Doc for the next 21 years before selling it to brothers Henry Spaniak and Joe Shepaniak (who spelled their names differently) in 1958.

Doyle’s service even impresses first-time customers. He once served two men a couple of martinis and some stout beers and was shocked when they left him a $500 tip — his biggest ever — which he split with the other bartender working that day. The storied heritage and classic pub ambience draw all types of bar-goers, from college kids avoiding the library to young professionals grabbing after-work beers, families catching an Eagles game, to retirees.

This quirky and cartoonish destination has been drawing hours-long lines since it first opened thanks to its impossibly whimsical interior that transports eaters into the world of Mario. The masterpiece for the property, though, is the retractable roof over the primary dining area, which opens year-round to the sky. The quick turnaround has produced an open-feeling space surrounded by teak sliding doors. There are no enclosed walls on three sides, making the entire place feel like an open-air patio, but also requires a ton of overhead electric heaters to keep it comfortable inside.

Minecraft house: how to get started and build ideas

easy minecraft house

This design combines the best of medieval vibes with the ease of a compact house. Try it when you’re not feeling in the mood for complicated layouts. Of course, it might be easier trying out this build in Creative mode or by swapping the quartz blocks for white concrete.

Cool Beach House

Creating a realistic-looking mushroom is very challenging, but luckily for us, YouTuber BlueNerd made an incredibly handy step-by-step tutorial. As mentioned in the video, you might want to swap the white terracotta blocks for white concrete if it looks too pink. If you’re in the jungle this is easy as there’s no shortage of large trees. However, if you want more of a challenge, you can always build your own custom tree. Once you have a tree, build a way to climb to the top, then you can build your treehouse.

Treehouse

The contrast between the textures of deepslate and spruce wood gives a decidedly cozy feel, and leads to a lovely blend between both rugged and more homey styles. This design by Sv Gravity elevates the player’s living area, leaving room for farm area underneath. Not only is it small, it uses easily attainable materials, and the build itself being recorded in survival mode makes it much easier to follow.

Even More Minecraft House Builds

On the other hand, you could be the type to continually expand and use your home as a canvas to display the extent of your travels. Either way, if and when you're stumped for ideas on how to add a flourish to the bland and stereotypical wooden four walls approach, you can start here from our list of 10 favorite Minecraft House builds. Now 1.20 and the Minecraft Cherry Grove biome aren’t brand-new anymore, there are loads of cherry wood house ideas out there to learn from. We just had to put a couple of different ones on this list as they are all too cute, but this cherry blossom starter house from Polar Cat on Youtube might just be our favorite. 51 cool Minecraft house ideas to inspire you, from using any wood type, building in a Japanese style, or just the easiest starter house.

Jungle Treehouse

This is the sort of house you’re gonna want to build early on, all it really needs space for is the basics, like your bed, crafting table, furnace, and storage options. Using a more interesting range of blocks such as logs or contrasting colors of wood gives the building so much more depth. For our last treehouse to end us on a literal high, we have another towering design by YouTuber 6tenstudio.

Large Farmhouse 2

Thankfully, there’s a tutorial showing you how to build this awesome farmhouse. I don’t know about you, but I love this regular house with a red roof and a small garden. I’ve also included some of my favorite YouTube tutorials if you’re looking for step-by-step instructions. From tree houses to wooden cabins to mountain houses, these houses will set you on your way to creating your dream home.

Wooden Modern House

You can build your new home perched atop a tree or build a brand-new tree from scratch. Getting the base right is essential in the construction of your Minecraft treehouse, whether you want a tree that functions as a house or a house at the top of a tree. This concealed and peaceful home, adorned with rose bushes and featuring a nifty trapdoor, is a great place to start.

Folli is back with an incredibly comprehensive 90 minute video showing you how to put together a fabulously intricate house inspired by Japanese architecture. The prismarine blocks used to create the roofing are especially nice, and provide a striking contrast against the dark wooden walls. If you want to build something in line with modern sensibilities, YouTuber IrieGenie has put together a lovely design complete with a pool out front. The materials required are far from cheap, and are largely composed of quartz, concrete, and granite as well as the more affordable stone and sandstone blocks - but the results are exquisite.

Modern House With Pool

Perhaps your starting location is somewhere close to the coast, and you want something a little more fitting for the local area. Whether your idea of a beach house is a ramshackle hut nestled on the water’s edge or a serene three-tiered mansion complete with a swimming pool, there are tonnes to choose from. It has a clever use of trap doors as decorations but takes quite a lot of quartz blocks to construct. It has a small pool to tip your tootsies in, fitting for a relaxing end to a hard day’s adventuring. You might not technically be able to call this a “house”, but it’s certainly still a home – and a pretty awesome one at that.

Having that in mind, why not make some bold choices, not only in the design and layout of your house, but the materials used? Make a mark on the world that stands out, as opposed to blending in. With many modern houses, you see architects aiming to build a cool house that's unique.

Some players even place light sources around and on top of the house for extra protection. Once you have collected the materials and selected a location, you can follow these steps to start the building process for your Minecraft house. From soil to obsidian, you can practically use any nonfloating block in Minecraft to make your house.

The Spruce Starter House is best generated somewhere along the lines of the Giant Spruce Taiga Hills in Minecraft. This is an area that’s home to tall trees and forests that often tend to encapsulate everything that a player builds in them. Once done, continue by placing two Gray Concrete blocks to the right of the six-block structure, and then take it all the way down.

Creating a shelter in your Minecraft world is one of the first important tasks you’ll face. After all, you need a base to rest your weary feet when the sun starts setting and the mobs begin spawning at night. To see all the kinds of treehouses you can create, check out our Minecraft Treehouse Ideas too.

This painstakingly crafted manor is made from logs and stone bricks, but the real strength is in the little details. The chains and lanterns, the flora creeping up the walls, the shutters made from trapdoors, and the excellent clock faces in the towers all combine to make this house a real feast for the eyes. The aptly named Minecraft Fantasy Builds channel put together a video on how to build their grand fantasy house from start to finish.

This means that the house isn’t too large but it is also not minuscule. You will require Striped Spruce Logs to form the exterior of the house in combination with some Oak Planks. Don’t forget that you have two left a two-block gap to the right side of the main circular format for the house to build the balcony. You’ll need about 32 Stripped Spruce Wood blocks, 83 Spruce Stairs, Seed crops of your liking, Lanterns, and 68 Stripped Oak Wood.

So, it seems only natural that sooner or later directing would be her next step. Petty herself remains offscreen, but assembles an impressive cast to re-create her childhood. The characters all speak in the stilted style of an over-earnest stage play, in stark contrast to the subtle, texture-oriented attention the pic gives to nonverbal details. In her directorial debut, Lori Petty grapples with a traumatic adolescent experience in which she was raped by her mother's pimp. The Poker House is one of the most personal, wounded films in years. That it is also one of the most confused reflects how deeply it springs from the psyche of its director.

Betting limits cater to a wide range of players, from low stakes to high roller tables. Cash games are common, with varying buy-ins to accommodate different bankrolls. The character of Agnes is based on Lori Petty and Jennifer Lawrence tackles the role with as much human force and energy as Petty lives her own life. As Agnes, she is engaging, inviting, strong and loving but at her core, there is still a childlike essence that Lawrence beautifully conveys on screen. Off screen, Lawrence’s vibrancy, free-spirited honesty and love of life is more than evident, making it easy to see how Petty came to cast her as Agnes. Interestingly, as she self-describes it, Lawrence “sucks at basketball”, but despite this, Petty, who played ball in school, managed to show her a few moves. The California Grand Casino has been offering poker of one kind or another since the 19th century.

Agnes believes Duval is her boyfriend and that he loves her, despite being much older and his abuse towards her mother. It is revealed that before they left their father, who was a preacher, he used to beat Sarah and the girls. The four fled, and Sarah, struggling to take care of the girls on her own, became a prostitute after meeting Duval. But apparently it wasn’t the first time Johnson extended an olive branch to members of the other party, including President Joe Biden. The Golden State provides a range of treatment centers and helplines offering help to anyone who has a gambling problem.

To report this income, one must fill out a W-2G form if the winnings meet certain thresholds. Such is the size of the poker scene in California, the state has been able to host some of the largest tours on the planet. Agnes, a school basketball star, scores 27 points in the second half alone, a record that lasts for years to come.

The casino can accommodate a large number of cash players, ensuring a lively and dynamic atmosphere. Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo are also favored in California’s cardrooms, especially in cash games. In Omaha, you receive four hole cards and share five community cards with the other players. The aim is to make the best five-card hand using two hole cards and three community cards.

While they are prohibited from offering classic casino games like blackjack (these are restricted to tribal casinos), cardrooms have come up with ‘California Games’. These are card games where each player acts as the “dealer” and the house simply takes a rake. Every decent California poker room spreads a mix of cash games and tournaments.

Don’t miss out on their happy hour deals, which provide excellent value for your money. The Bicycle Casino is also the home of the popular Live at The Bike TV show, the first and only regularly scheduled online-streamed cash game poker show. This allows you to not only play but also to be a part of poker history. The farmhouse itself has a large porch and tons of decorative details. It’ll undoubtedly take some time to recreate this farm, but that’s mostly because of its size. The important resources, wood, and brick (clay), aren’t too hard to come by.

A good thing about a farm is that you can add it to any house mentioned in this list. If you’re more skilled you could even use redstone to help you harvest your crops quickly. When I think underground house I just think of a shabby bunker, but ItsMarloe's underground base has blown my expectations away. It's not exactly inconspicuous, but it certainly has plenty of style.

It's time to make your next house epic (or simple, or hidden, or weird....you decide!)

Let’s start this list off with a more spooky entry to the Minecraft house ideas, with this jaw-dropping skull mountain base, designed by YouTuber ‘Ayvocado’. This is peak creativity and you’ll be able to show off your building skills with this one. The best Minecraft house ideas can help you survive the harsh realm of survival mode. Having to monitor your health, food levels, and the many dangers that traverse the landscape, can be a real pain for most Minecraft players. But putting in the time and the effort to make your house a home can make all the difference when it comes getting the most out of your game.

Just like a regular house, you can expand and improve on it as your progress with your Minecraft journey. The main purpose of the house is to offer you shelter and a storage location while mining. This suburban house is slightly bigger than the one above and perhaps even more suitable for your new residential area. It simply rocks the pastel-grey color, garage door, slick pavement, and well-trimmed hedges.

The stripped birch wood logs contrast nicely with the unstripped spruce logs, and the upper room with a glass wall is a nice touch as well. In addition to hollowing out trees, I loved building things into the sides of mountains. This habit didn’t annoy my brother so much—mostly because he couldn’t see it. This mountainside build by Random Steve Guy is definitely a “hole in the wall” so to speak, making it perfect for players just starting out. When I was little, I had an obsession with hollowing out trees and building houses inside them. It drove my brother crazy—mostly because it never turned out very good.

Build a House in Minecraft: A Complete Guide (

As for the building blocks, you’ll need stone, oak wood, and glass to get going. If you’re looking for easy Minecraft house ideas, you’re probably starting off in a new seed or have just begun trying out the game. Also keep in mind for underwater houses, you are often required to build a tunnel to get to the house, either straight down through the water or underground, and then up into the house. Either way, this permits you to come up with some unique ideas on how to conceal the entrance so those who don’t look too closely won’t even realize you’re dwelling beneath them.

The above home was built by YouTuber Kam The Builder, and features carpeted floors, an open-plan kitchen and dining area, and a whole heck of a lot of pink both inside and out. All those clean corners and non-symmetrical layouts make for a striking and pleasant place to call one's own. If you want inspiration for a dwelling that gives you enough room for every single one of your needs and more, then this mansion by IrieGenie is a great starting point for inspiration. The prismarine roof may give survival players a bit of trouble, but otherwise this is a very easily imitable house for newbies looking to start their Minecraft adventure. This beautifully designed farmhouse, once again built by JUNS MAB Architecture Tutorial, is a cut above most other Minecraft farmhouses thanks to the modular raised design of its little square farms. There's also plenty of room inside the foundations for later expansion, and you could even house a mineshaft all the way down to Diamond level.

Small in stature, the combination of nether brick roofs, stripped logs, and dark fences make it an eye-catching abode despite its size, and a welcome addition to any Minecraft village. If you’ve ever considered creating a dessert in the game, this mini house is the perfect addition. If you’ve been working on building a farm in your village, you’ll love this red barn inspiration.

What's different about this structure is its modern twist, with white floors and glass panes used in place of fences to make the artificial elements really stand out from its natural foundation. If the contrast appeals to you, then follow the video tutorial to recreate this foliage-laden hideout for yourself. Stripped logs are among my favourite building materials these days, and they're used to great effect to create this unusual take on a modern-style house, made primarily from wood of different kinds. This lovely creation by SheepGG has just the right amount of space, lighting, and touches of flora around the sides to turn it into a wonderfully welcoming abode.

You don’t often come across houses like this, so I was happy I found it. You’ll also find the fun video tutorial showing you how to build this soft pastel pink house. A small wooden starter base is a great way to get started in Minecraft. To see a quick video of this wooden base being built, check out @hiimzmc on Instagram. While you are perusing these awesome Minecraft house ideas, why not check out the best Minecraft survival servers – this way you can build one of these house ideas in a server that suits you.

The video includes every practical space you could possibly need, such as a library for enchantments, a bedroom with a magnificent view, a massive farm, and even a secret treasure chamber. This cave design is quite simple but very efficient, as you only need to remove some dirt and stones to create the main space. Note that this requires the use of a pickaxe, so it may be a bit harder to complete this house on day one if you’re a new player.

In addition, the house features a stairway that takes the user to the main house level. This is where the bed can be found, along with tons of nifty decorations like candles, lanterns, and paintings. You can also use flowers in flowerpots to kick things up an even higher notch.

If you want somewhere to call home when you return from fighting enemies or a place to brew potions in Minecraft, creating a house is both satisfying and rewarding. If you want to experiment a little further with some Minecraft mods, here’s how to install Minecraft Forge to keep them all in one place. Check out our Minecraft ideas guide to see some truly fantastic designs. If you’re after a tranquil home, intricately built using vibrant and traditional colors, this Minecraft Japanese house build by Zaypixel is a doddle to build. The main materials for crafting this are cobblestone, dark oak, spruce, Prismarine, and sandstone – and you can surround it with blossom trees using pink wool.

This Minecraft house idea has places for you to craft, smelt, enchant, sleep, store your loot, and even jump through a nether portal. It’s the perfect starting point for anyone and has all the essentials you would need to aid you in your exploration. We heard you like underground bases, so here’s one created by YouTuber ‘Spudetti‘.

The design, with white archways in the center of the room, is also functional; it separates the giant venue into nooks, so it doesn't have that hotel ballroom feel. The eight Vista Suites, which I didn't see, are even bigger than the Oceania Suites and located at the front of the ship, so they have extra-long wraparound balconies. The three Owner's Suites span the entire aft width of the ship, with two balconies, and are designed by Ralph Lauren Home. A light-filled grand foyer opens onto the living, dining and bar area on one side and the enormous master bedroom with king-sized bed, walk-in closet and generous bathroom with soaking tub and ocean-view shower. Standard balconies on Vista come with two upright chairs and a round drinks table, but the cushions made the seating comfier than the mesh-and-metal versions you find on many big-ship cruise lines. But Vista, by nature, will never offer the crew-to-guest ratio or over-the-top service levels you'd expect to find on a more expensive cruise line.

You also get access to the Concierge Lounge on Deck 9; I don't know why you'd want to watch TV in this windowless lounge, but I appreciated the 24/7 drinks and snacks and access to a concierge. The mini fridge was stocked with soft drinks, though my cabin attendant didn't seem to notice that I was drinking exclusively club soda. You'll also find the requisite safe and hair dryer (neither of which I used), an umbrella and a shoehorn. Oceania's Tranquility Beds are some of the best in the business, and I loved falling asleep between a snuggly duvet and 1,000-thread-count sheets. Even better, the bed is flanked by three-drawer nightstands, 100V plugs and USB ports and reading lights. New and noteworthy on Vista are Oceania's first dedicated solo cabins, 270-square-foot balcony cabins with a twin bed, smaller bathroom and slightly narrower design than a regular veranda room.

Waiting for us inside the hotel, the oldest on Corsica, dating back to 1880, was an impressive charcuterie spread, served under vines weeping down from wood-paneled ceilings. After lunch, I chatted with a server about the biodynamic red wine they were pouring and cozied up in the hotel’s sitting room, where I pulled a Molière biography from a paperback-cluttered shelf and read quietly aloud to my husband. I hit the jackpot – which, on Vista, isn’t winning big at the deck-six casino, it’s scoring a Red Ginger reservation — about halfway through our cruise, as we sailed from Malta to Naples. From our corner table, my husband and I took in the glass-and-gold light fixtures and the geometric black aluminum dividers that created cozy seating nooks near the windows. We dug into tuna and salmon sashimi, pork-and-vermicelli spring rolls, and — of course — the famed duck-and-watermelon salad (which lived up to the hype), all paired with a Sonoma chardonnay.

Oceania Cruises (oceaniacruises.com) is a Miami-based passenger shipping company operating a fleet of upper-premium, mid-sized vessels. Between April 2007 and September 2014, Oceania was owned by Apollo Management. Its dining system doesn't work so well on weeklong cruises, forcing passengers to miss out on the much-touted specialty restaurants or eat rather late.

A Culinary Center and Artist Loft are designed specifically for enrichment classes; the library is a sleeper hit with inviting leather chairs and quiet nooks adjacent to a coffee shop. The pool deck is beautiful, with just the right number of soft padded loungers to accommodate everyone on a sunny sea day. In September 2018, as part of OceaniaNEXT program, the company's website was redesigned and upgraded.

I could get dolled up and go to a steakhouse or Italian restaurant, or I could play it casual and eat on the buffet's outdoor terrace or at the pizzeria. I could enjoy a multi-course sit-down lunch or take my pick of eight burgers at the grill. Vista also had plenty of options for between-meal grazing – a quiche from the Bakery, a scone at Horizons' afternoon tea, or a cookie from the Concierge Lounge. Fans of the line will appreciate that Vista is modeled from sister ships Marina and Riviera, and the layout is strikingly similar.

They’re also part of a new class of Allura ships, which feature more onboard amenities and features compared with the other six ships in the fleet. Some examples of this on the Vista include four new dining venues, concierge-level staterooms for solo travelers and larger standard staterooms with over 290 square feet of space. Oceania Cruises ships' smaller size gives them access to ports that larger ships can’t visit. The line also offers world cruises that circumnavigate the globe in 180 days, as well as a range of longer, regionally focused sailings. Oceania is a small-ship cruise line for grownups, with an emphasis on destination-intensive itineraries.

(Yes, I petted the walls of the elevators and stroked every chair.) We luxuriated in enormous standard cabin bathrooms and sumptuous Tranquility Beds. We dined on exquisite freshly made pasta, perfectly cooked fish and decadent desserts. We ordered smoked, bubbled, herbed and ice-balled cocktails at the ship's craft cocktail bar and took photos of each creative concoction. Oceania Cruises is proud to partner with Luggage Forward®, the specialty service offering you the option to have any additional baggage or equipment shipped from your doorstep directly to any Oceania Cruises voyage and then back again. Allow yourself to relax and avoid the inconvenience of carrying, checking and claiming luggage and even going through Customs.

During the day, casual attire is fine, but please don't wear swimwear, bathrobes or pajamas in public areas. Vista has complimentary self-service launderettes on decks 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Each is outfitted with a detergent dispenser, washers and dryers, an ironing board and a seating area with a TV if you choose to wait for your load to finish.

The new service allows passengers to ship their luggage doorstep-to-stateroom (and back home again), thus truly traveling light. Luggage Forward provides premier door-to-door shipping services to 200 countries worldwide (including over 150 cruise ports). The company's own team of Customs specialists handles the country-specific paperwork to ensure on-time deliveries. Vista is not an all-inclusive ship, but it's more inclusive than lines such as Celebrity Cruises or Holland America. Its fares cover all dining (except for private, wine-paired dinners), fitness classes, nonalcoholic beverages and in-port shuttles.

They are mostly found on Deck 12, but two on Deck 11 aft have wraparound corner balconies. Concierge Level rooms come with extra perks, most of which are useful but not necessary. You get access to the lovely Aquamar Spa Terrace, with its hot tubs, day beds and thalassotherapy pool.

Moreover, the company said that it would begin cruising to Alaska from early August following the passage of the U.S. Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, which temporarily enables cruise ships to sail to Alaska, bypassing a legal requirement to make a stop at ports in Canada, which has banned cruses until 2022.
